Science Teacher Paula Cuello Attends Water Conference in Singapore

Water is increasingly becoming an issue worldwide: it may be a water shortage, or sea levels rising, problems with water sanitation, or natural events that can be devastating and dangerous. The issue of water faces every nation. The conference was held in Singapore which has good reason to be concerned about water, as they import a large proportion of their water from Malaysia, making them vulnerable as a country.
The conference attracted world-renowned experts and prestigous speakers on water who make frequent visits to Singapore. It also gave students from around the world an opportunity to showcase their cultures and projects on water. The next conference to be held in the Netherlands.

Paula also visited some schools and was able to see some fascinating lab set ups. Schools in Singapore are very well funded, and there is much emphasis on science and technology. She was particularly struck by the OpenLab at Raffles Institution, where the conference was hosted. This is a lab where students with an interest in science design and perform long term experiments in their spare time. They have three PhDs working there on hand with three different specialties to guide students as they work on their experiments. It was extremely well designed, and could easily have been in a university lab. The Ngee Ann School was similarly impressive. All the schools had large, well-equipped teaching kitchens, as well as interesting ideas about design and technology in the classroom. Ngee Ann in particular was very active in trying out new technology, and students engaged in impressive design/engineering/technology projects.

Paula returned home with many ideas, and a renewed interest in the topic of water.
