Library Program

The First Program Library, an expansive resource comprising 15,650 volumes, is designed to support the Fist Program curriculum. It includes outstanding examples of award-winning texts from various cultural and ethnic origins. All classes visit the library weekly. Kindergarten and first grade students concentrate on age-appropriate literature such as “I Can Read Books.” Second graders read Caldecott and Newbery Award selections and are introduced to the Dewey Decimal System. Third grade students receive instruction in developing their research skills. They also are introduced to WEBCAT, the library’s automated card catalog system, as well as many additional online systems.

Students make book selections that go home and are also encouraged to visit the library individually to exchange books or to do independent research. Parents are also encouraged to visit the library after school. In addition, each First Program classroom has its own classroom library to supplement the regular collection.
