Dalton’s New Lab for Technology and Learning provides computer literacy training for faculty and students. With support from New Lab personnel, teachers integrate computers in all curricular content areas and develop independent projects that enhance their classroom studies. All students, kindergarten through third grade, receive a hands-on introduction to the Macintosh computer. Word processing is introduced as early as kindergarten. Throughout the year, the learning process continues as projects become more sophisticated.
At the primary age, technology activities involve a combination of skills that include expression, exploration, presentation, and reflection. Use of the computer may also alleviate the frustration some children experience because of developing motor skills. Using a wide range of technologies, First Program students write and illustrate their own books, graph mathematical relationships, produce multimedia presentations, and explore the Internet under the guidance of faculty members as they research projects.
