About the Library

Dalton's First Program library has 15,650 books for children in grades K-3. The librarians focus on a literature-based program to promote a love of reading, an appreciation of genres, and familiarity with specific authors. In addition, a strong library skills curriculum is firmly in place, incorporating treasure hunts, reading aloud, and story telling.

Access to the library happens in several ways. Each class visits the library in whole or half groups once a week. This visit begins with a more structured time in which children are exposed to different types of literature and taught library skills. They are then allowed to browse freely among the collection. Librarians make it a point to stay familiar with the children's interests and abilities so that they can help them to make good, appropriate choices. They also respect that children need time to choose books and thereby foster a sense of independence. The library is also open after school, and children and parents may check out books at this time.
