Dalton Girls Take Chicago by Storm - A National Chess Championship Win
On the weekend of April 11-14, fourteen Dalton girls from Kindergarten to Grade 8 competed in the All Girls National Chess Championship in Chicago. The opportunity to join hundreds of female chess players from across the United States is an important annual event for Dalton girls in addition to competing in other National and State events with the coed Dalton chess team.
The girls continued their longstanding winning tradition, with the U12 team becoming the National Champions for their age group. The U14 team took 3rd place and the U10 team won 4th place in their respective sections. The U8 team also performed well, placing 9th while competing with a partial team, following on their recent 1st place win at the NY Girls State Championship. Under the coaching guidance of Beatriz Marinello and Adia Onyango, Dalton girls showed their focus and competitive spirit.
Iris Mou '27 earned the individual National Champion title in the U12 section, which also qualifies her for the World Cadet Chess tournament in China later this year. Other individual awards included Reese Rutkoske '28 (U10) in 13th place, Pippa Lee '24 (U14) in 10th place, and Julia Miyasaka '24 (U14) in 7th place.
This also marked a milestone for Dalton as it was the first year Dalton girls have competed in Under 8, 10, 12, 14, and 16 sections. We would also like to extend a thank you to Coach David MacEnulty for his support in this event over the years.
It has been wonderful to see the presence of girls in chess grow. Congratulations to these amazing girls!
