Dalton Wins Mayor's Cup in Boys and Girls Cross Country
Dalton Cross Country Boys and Girls teams both won their races at the Mayor's Cup on Saturday, October 5 for the first time in the program's history.
It was a historic day for the Dalton Cross Country team as both the Boys and Girls teams won their races at the Mayor's Cup, marking the first time ever that both teams won the meet. This was the first championship for the Boys team as the Tigers beat second-place Horace Mann by 12 points.
Dalton was led by a stellar performance by Ari Eaton '20 who finished second in the race, shattering his previous PR by 28 seconds and running just over 14 minutes for the 2.5-mile course. Eaton was followed by Connor Rust '22 who placed ninth overall out of the 162 runners. Junior Daniel Simmons '21 was 11th and senior Ravi Eaton '20 finished 12th for the Tigers. Both Simmons and Eaton outkicked two Horace Mann runners down the stretch to provide some breathing room in the scores. Freshman Luke Rostan '23 was the fifth Tiger runner to cross the line, coming in 22nd place. Seniors Tibor Rothschild '20 and Sean Ryan '20 came in 6th and 7th for Dalton to complete the race.
The Girls team had an even tighter finish, beating PSAL-school Curtis by 6 points to win the race for the second time in school history. Senior Toni DaCosta '20 led the way, putting forth a gutsy effort to finish in second place in one of her top times ever, completing the 2.5-mile course in 16:39. Eighth-grader Naomi Gomel came in fourth and junior Grace Chaikin '21 was eighth, giving Dalton three runners in the top 10 for the first time ever. Freshman Mary Ashley Groot '23 cut a minute off her previous best time to place 28th and junior Emily Saxl '21 completed the Tigers five, placing 56th. Sophomores Audrey Liu '22 and Charlotte Sadelain '22 rounded out the Tigers finishers.
