Over Presidents Day weekend, Dalton chess players excelled amongst 250+ teams at the U.S. Amateur Team East (USATE) open chess tournament in Parsippany, New Jersey.
Teams consist of four players of all ages with a combined U.S. Chess Federation average rating that does not exceed 2200. The nationwide field of teams featured witty names, creative branding, and tons of camaraderie in this unique annual tournament.

Composed of Gus Huston '24, Nate Shuman '24, Iris Mou '27, and Ryan Peterson '24, Dalton’s “The Corona Exchange Variation” dominated the field, logging an impressive 3rd Place overall finish and as well as the Top Scholastic team in the competition.

Dalton also had a strong finish from “Go e4th Unafraid,” featuring Max Mattola '25, Johji Nakada (incoming '25), Maxwell Massiah '25, and Kevin Stern '29. Also, Dalton 4th grader Michael Warren '30 attended the event to practice and participated in two games.

In addition to the students, Dalton Chess Program Director Beatriz Marinello joined other coaches and Dalton alums in the competition. It was a great start to the year of the Tiger!
