Art Students' Creative Works Brighten 89th Street Lobby

The 89th Street lobby features a fresh new look thanks to the creativity of Dalton Visual Arts students.
Visual Arts teacher Ellen Stavitsky's eighth grade students' pear collages are displayed in the 89th Lobby this week and are a bright, welcome addition, while fellow VA teacher Carol Bowen's High School Painting 1 and 2 classes displayed their oil pastel portraits

The MS pear collage assignment teaches students how to create a sense of volume with gradations of color. Students started their works by drawing a pear before using torn pieces of Color-aid paper. The ripped paper pieces create the illusion of light falling across the form, making the pears look three-dimensional.

The HS oil pastel portraits draw inspiration from the paintings of artist Wayne Thiebaud, who makes dramatic paintings of simple objects such as desserts. Students studied Thiebaud's works and applied their understanding of chiaroscuro (the use of tone) to create drama.
