Dalton Senior Named U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts

Following his recognition as a National YoungArts finalist in Theater, Dalton Senior George Porteous ’23 was named one of this year’s 20 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts. The Presidential Scholars Medallion, presented on behalf of President Biden, is one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students who exemplify artistic and academic excellence, leadership qualities, and community service. George is one of three recipients recognized for acting.
U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona said in his announcement, “U.S. Presidential Scholars have always represented the future of our country and the bright promise it holds. Your passion and intellect, pursuit of excellence, and spirit of service are exactly what our country needs.” Clive Chang, President of YoungArts, added, “The 2023 U.S. Presidential Scholars in the Arts represent the next generation of storytellers and changemakers in our country. YoungArts is incredibly proud to celebrate these young artists today and to amplify their unique voices as they grow to become our nation’s most influential cultural ambassadors.”

For his application, George submitted essays, transcripts, and recommendations, and wrote about an influential high school teacher. He nominated Dalton theater teacher Bob Sloan, who is now a U.S. Presidential Scholars Distinguished Teacher.
