With First Meet, Swimming is off to an Auspicious Start

With a strong team of returning and new swimmers from all four high school grades—and one eighth grader—members of Dalton Swim walked into the Ivy Relay Meet on Wednesday at Lehman College with a newfound readiness, excited for the season ahead of them. This was the first meet of the season where all seven teams in the Ivy Preparatory League participated, competing in relay events.

In the 8x50 freestyle relay, Dalton Boys finished in first place, winning by four seconds with an impressive time of 3:24. Although the Dalton Girls participated in the meet with only four eligible competitors (due to injuries and illnesses), they certainly left their mark; competing in four events, they finished in first place twice and came in a close second in the other two. A member of the team, Brendan Roth (‘18), described the enthusiasm in the pool at the first meet as palpable: “you could feel the energy in the room.” The atmosphere, he said, was “electric.” Dalton’s first-place finishes in these several races is an especially impressive feat considering that multiple other teams have nationally ranked swimmers.

Dalton swimming is excited for its upcoming meets this season, especially for the Ivy Championship on February 5 and 6 at Lehman College, where the seven teams will meet once again at an official USA Swimming meet with individual events. The team is led by seniors Nicholas Clark, Laeo Crnkovic-Rubsamen, Ava Crnkovic-Rubsamen, Arjun Prasad, Brendan Roth, Jack Stettner, and Kaitlin Young and is coached by Kate Hallex, Deanna Culbreath, and Anne Gregory.
