Dalton Tiger Report - This Week In Athletics (1-19)

Read about some of the great performances from the week.
Boys Basketball
With recent injuries that have left the team missing vital members of the lineup, the Tigers dropped their first two games last week after the two-week winter break. However, in a rematch of last year's NYSAIS championship game on Wednesday, the Dalton Boys Basketball team bounced back and defeated Lawrence Woodmere. After starting the game trailing 0-7, Dalton responded by locking down on defense and holding their opponent to just 16 points over the next 2 plus quarters. Senior captain Mark Engel led the way with 27 points and 9 rebounds as Dalton held on by a score of 51-48. The victory over Woodmere capped off a four-game winning streak that has put Dalton back in the mix among the top teams in NYSAIS with a 12-3 record. With one week off, Dalton will return with a game in the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday, January 25th against a tough NYCHSAA opponent, Xavier High School.

Girls Basketball
The Dalton Girls Basketball team scored their biggest victory of the season on Wednesday by defeating defending state champion Masters by a score of 57-49. After a close first quarter, Masters pulled ahead by 7 in the second with a run that included six three-pointers. Dalton chipped away at the lead as they continued to pound the ball inside and entered the fourth quarter ahead by 2 points. After going back and forth for the first few minutes of the final quarter, Dalton took the lead with consecutive clutch three-point shots by sophomore Naomi Steele and senior Dagny Patton and never trailed again. Dalton held on in the final minutes of the game to win giving them their 11th victory of the season. The Tigers were led by 20 points from junior Tori DaCosta, 18 points and 21 rebounds from freshman Mary Ashley Groot, and stellar defense by senior Toni DaCosta who shut down the opponent's top player. Dalton will next take on Maria Regina in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic on Saturday, January 25 at Fieldston School.
