Dalton Chess Team Supernationals Performance: A Fantastic Finish to a Fantastic Year

The Dalton Chess Tigers struck again at the Supernational Chess Tournament (it’s called the supernationals because elementary, junior high and senior high school teams all meet at the same time at the same venue—this happens once every four years). The K3 team took first place with an impressive two-point lead over the nearest rival. The K6 team also claimed the first place, with an astounding three and a half point margin.  This was total domination, as often only a half point can separate the top four or five teams.
Over 5500 children from 49 states competed in this event held in Nashville.  The 4-day championship was included in regular coverage of the teams and matches in many local and national news outlets and also on http://www.uschess.org and Twitter

Our K1 team and our K9 team made a very respectable showing as well, each coming in third in their respective sections.  Our K5 team, made up exclusively of fourth graders as our fifth graders elected to play up in the sixth grade section put on a strong showing as well, coming in seventh in the country.

As an added bonus our K3 and K6 teams also were national champions in the blitz tournament held the night before the main event.

And for yet more good news, Gus Huston '24 and Sumit Dhar '23 were co-national champions in the K6 section, each garnering six points out of a possible seven.  Gus had a remarkable performance, placing second place in Blitz and going undefeated by winning five games and drawing two.  His two draws were against masters in the final two rounds.

As the chess season comes to a close, I am very happy to say that for the 2016-17 academic year the Dalton Chess Team posted the strongest performance of any team in the country.  In addition to the recent domination at the Supernationals, we won four championships in the fall national grade tournament, along with three second-place finishes.  We also took top places in the New York City and New York State championships, the All Girls New York State and the All Girls Nationals.  2016-17 has been a great year.

Special recognition should go to the Dalton chess parents for their world-class support, dedication and innovation. Thanks also, to the coaching our children receive from their private teachers, and to our regular tournament analysts, GM Miron Sher, WGM Alla Grinfeld, WIM Beariz Marinello, NM Jerald Times, and Expert Nelson Dunn.  Year after year they make a major contribution to our success.
