Getting to Know Head of School-Elect Jim Best

Head of School-Elect Jim Best greeted a group of 20 parents in his first of six sessions designed to share thoughts, convey preferences, and introduce future priorities. Affirming Ellen Stein’s leadership in 2017-2018, Jim communicated his desire to partner with Ellen, build on her legacy, and continue to address the importance of preparing students for an increasingly dynamic world.
Cordially introduced by Dalton Trustee Mark Chan, Jim described his teaching journey, commitment to relationship building, and devotion to inspiring curious and motivated students. To illustrate his innovative style and highlight his educational journey rooted in language and art history, Jim asked parents to collaborate and respond to questions about a mysterious art object.  The parents came to view the object as a metaphor for Dalton - emphasizing the value of active learning and the benefits of collaborative problem-solving.

The session ended with questions and answers from parents to Jim and from Jim to parents. It was a jam-packed, inquiry-based hour that served to introduce Jim to a wider audience, engage community members in important conversations about the school’s future, and promise the continuation of strong, creative leadership at Dalton.

P.S. - We plan to offer more opportunities to get to know Jim in the Fall. Jim looks forward to meeting and inspiring more community members as he transitions to his new Dalton role!
