High School Students Predict Food Futures at the Extrapolation Factory

On November 9, students in the senior elective "Food/Environment/Activism" traveled to the New Lab in the Brooklyn Navy Yard to work with the Extrapolation Factory on "food futures." After conducting preliminary research into "food futures, students identified "signals"(significant contemporary and/or historical developments and events) representing indicators of the future of food production, consumption, distribution, accessibility, and regulation.
Students then considered the idea and practice of food packaging and considered the labeling used to sell food (or some idea or ideal associated with it) and/ or the material aspects of the food (e.g. shrink-wrapped cucumbers).  This allowed the students to see how food packaging serves as a system of communication filled signs and symbols.  Students then worked collaboratively to create new forms of packaging that spoke to the future of food and then re-contextualized these items in local supermarkets in order to photograph them (as a kind of exercise in realizing the future of food).
