The Ivy League Championship meet, which spanned over this past Monday and Tuesday, brought Dalton Varsity Swim’s already historic season to an exhilarating close. The meet consisted of all seven teams of the Ivy Preparatory League (Trinity, Hackley, Poly Prep, Horace Mann, Fieldston and Riverdale). Dalton entered the competition with a 4-7 record in season behind it, one of the best performances in recent history.

Girls Swimming stepped up to the blocks with only four eligible competitors; nonetheless, all four qualified for Finals. The top scorers for the Girls were Claire Jiang (‘20) with 16 points, Alyssa Fan (‘22) with 13 points, Tsering Yangchen (‘21) with 11 points and Ava Crnkovic-Rubsamen (‘18) with three points. Fan summed up the girls’ season, saying, “We had 4 girls but almost scored as many points as other Ivy schools.” The team placed top three in all of its relays, which proved to be exciting races. In the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, the girls placed second overall with an impressive time of 1:48.09. Despite the team’s best efforts, it finished seventh overall.

On the boys side, the team had a successful outing in Prelims. 11 out of 20 of Dalton’s swimmers qualified for Finals, with six swimmers qualifying for A finals and finishing in the top eight out of the whole league in their events. The top four scorers for the Boys team were Chris Kim (‘21) with 27 points, Athan Yanos (‘19) with 25 points, Emilio Vicioso (‘19) and Tyler Roonprapunt (‘21) tied with 24 points each, and Laeo Crnkovic-Rubsamen (‘18) with 15 points. The dynamic team ended up placing fifth overall at the meet, and an impressive fourth overall for the season, a significant improvement from past years when the team has commonly finished last.

The effort, dedication, and time put into the team by Coaches Kate Hallex, Deanna Culbreath and Ben Green was evident as they watched their swimmers place as high as second in whole Ivy Preparatory League.
