Dalton Participates in the First Statewide Programming Contest

Dalton joined forces with Cornell Tech NYC & Cornell-Ithaca to create the first statewide high school programming competition on April 9. For the past five years, Dalton has frequently traveled to Ithaca to participate in their contest. This travel and competition time represented a substantial time commitment for both the students and faculty. Last summer, meetings began with both Cornell campuses on how we could jointly build a concurrent contest where upstate and downstate team could compete against one another in a "north versus south" event.
On the Cornell Tech campus, there were 38 teams from four boroughs, Long Island and New Jersey. In Ithaca, 43 teams participated. Teams of two to three students had three hours to solve as many of the 12 problems provided as possible. For each correct solution, a team received a color-coded balloon.

Teams in each location who solved the most problems earned gold, silver, and bronze awards and the overall winner across both campuses also won a trophy.

"It was really exciting to see this community of young coders come together to compete with so much talent and enthusiasm," said Diane Levitt, Senior Director of K-12 Education at Cornell Tech and organizer of the New York City event, according to the Cornell Chronicle

Dalton was well-represented with six teams.

The Cornell Hackathon consisted of solving different mathematics and logic problems using a computer. The staff at the Hackathon worked to create a fun, competitive environment by handing each team a balloon for every problem they solved.

"I really enjoyed the hackathon and felt it was a fun exercise in problem-solving, coding quickly, and efficiency in debugging." ~ Devin Milberg '19

"The three hours we spent coding were really exciting! It was very challenging to try to solve these problems in the best possible way, and we definitely went down some wrong roads but did pretty well for our level of preparation. Teams received a color-coded balloon for every problem they solved, which was fun because you could see how other people were doing, and which ones people were solving first. We solved four of the problems which means we got four balloons in the end! Figuring out which problems people were solving first was intimidating but in a good way. Solving a problem and seeing all the test data pass the test was the most rewarding thing!" ~ Isha Chirimar '19 & Ava Mohajer '19
