Dalton Tiger Report - This Week In Athletics (10-7)

Read about some of the great performances and highlights from the past week. This week features Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Cross Country, and Tennis.
Boys Varsity Soccer
Boys Soccer defeated Trevor Day 4-3 in their opening matchup of the week, highlighted by a strong offensive attack of goals by captains Addison Miller and Justin Taub, Will Tomlinson, and Mateos Haile-Manas, scoring his first goal of the season. "There’s a lot of depth on the team - everybody adds something,” said Elijah Henderson. On Wednesday against Horace Mann, Sammy Pichler and Justin Taub scored with the team coming from behind twice to finish with a 3-3 draw. As the leading goal scorer on the team, Justin Taub is averaging 1.125 goals per game and has accounted for 62% of goals scored, with Addison Miller as the second leading goal scorer on the team with three. On Friday, Dalton defeated Fieldston 3-1. Boys Soccer currently sits third in the league.

Girls Varsity Soccer
The Dalton Girls Varsity Soccer team kicked off the week with a 1-0 victory over Brearley. With Dalton attacking in the first half, Liza Katz one touch kicked a ball from outside of the box over the goalie’s head with her left foot for the only goal of the game. The win was especially impressive given that the team was missing multiple starters. On Wednesday, the Tigers defeated Horace Mann with a dominant 3-1 victory led by a strong offensive campaign with Liza Katz adding a hat-trick of goals. Katz leads the team in scoring. “We had a bit of a tough start to the season but are on a strong winning streak and will be carrying the momentum into our push for states.” said senior striker Sylvie Lane. Dalton finished the week with a 2-1 win against Fieldston, avenging a loss earlier in the season. Dalton finds itself sitting fourth in the league.

Varsity Cross Country
This past weekend was one of Dalton Cross Country’s biggest meets of the year - NYC Mayor's Cup. The Boys team finished third overall out of 24 teams and the Girls squad came in 5th overall out 20 teams. The day featured some great performances with four runners finishing in the top 15 in their respective races -- Ari Eaton (8th of out 174), Davide Murillo (11th out of 174), Toni DaCosta (4th out of 160), and Grace Chaikin (8th out of 160). “We’ve had a successful year so far and a lot of the young talent we have on this year’s squad should continue to improve.” said junior runner Ravi Eaton. The team continues to train and prepare for the Ivy Championships in two weeks.

Varsity Tennis
In their first match on Tuesday, Varsity Tennis swept Trevor Day 5-0, winning all four singles 8-0 (playing an 8-game pro sets) and both doubles as well. The team lost 4-1 in their second match of the week against an undefeated Poly Prep team with first doubles and team captains Mia Freund and Kate Kaplin winning their match. In their final match of the week, Dalton defeated Columbia Prep 8-5 with great victories by Phoebe Cahill at two singles, Jamie Gelman at three singles, and Julia Freitag and Shravya Pant at two doubles. Team captain Jamie Gelman said “the season has been awesome as we’ve been especially close this season and we are doing much better than we could have expected in season, especially in comparison with the past few years. When we beat Trinity in our homecoming game, for the first time since anyone can remember, it really lifted our spirits.”
