Dalton Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity

Over Spring Break, Dalton HS students and faculty members traveled to New Orleans for a special service learning trip with Habitat for Humanity.
During their time in Louisiana, students gave back to the community by constructing a duplex house in the city's Lower Ninth Ward, which will be the home to two local families. Building the house required teams of students to come together and work for the benefit of others, using hammers, saws, sledgehammers, and also raising interior and exterior walls.

Dalton community members who attended the trip included:

  • Malcolm Cox '19
  • Athan Yanos '19
  • Ari Eaton '20
  • Ravi Eaton '20
  • Kai Hansen '20
  • Alexander Romero-Ruffo '20
  • Peter Haas '20
  • Iman Thiam '21
  • Andrew Glassman, HS English Department Chair
  • Isabel Oyuela-Bonzani, Architecture Teacher
  • Christine Payne, Director of Library and Information Services
  • Joseph Quain, MS Librarian
Mr. Glassman, who has volunteered on the Habitat for Humanity trip 13 times, stated that students not only learned about a type of practical work that they can use to improve others' home life but also about the deep cultural history of New Orleans, including its involvement in slavery, its recovery, and response to Hurrican Katrina, as well as its art and the spiritual practice of Vodoo.

"As a Dalton citizen, this trip meant that we have the opportunity to help communities outside our own," commented Iman Thiam '21. "It is so important to use the privileges we have to help others no matter if it's big or small."

In their downtime, students had the opportunity to experience a variety of New Orlean's Cajun culture, including the city's historic parades, amazing art galleries, meals with jambalaya and crawfish, and of course a trip to the acclaimed Cafe du Monde for their world famous beignets.
