Dalton Students Represent USA in Pan American Youth Chess Championship

In July, four Dalton students participated in the Pan American Youth Chess Championship in Guayaquil, Ecuador.
Marcus Miyasaka '21, Julia Miyasaka '24, Gus Huston '24, and William Safranek '26 joined more than 600 chess players representing 27 countries in North and South America. One of the largest international youth chess tournaments, the Pan American Championship spans eight days and provides an opportunity not only for strong competition, but also to meet and engage with students from a wide range of nations and cultures.

Gus Huston '24 won the gold medal in the U14 category, taking a clear first place.  His performance also earned him the international chess title of FIDE Master.  Marcus Miyasaka '21 finished in 10th place in the U18 section.  Julia Miyasaka '24 placed 25th in the U14 Girls category.  William Safranek '26 placed 36th in the U12 section.

In addition to their strong individual showings, Marcus, Julia, Gus, and William also competed as members of the United States Chess Team, which took first place in the medal count with 5 gold, 3 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Please join us in congratulating our students on their chess success!
