Dalton Tiger Report - This Week In Athletics (10-6)

Read about some of the great performances and highlights from the past week.
Girls Volleyball
The Volleyball team continued their excellent season with one of the biggest wins in years, defeating Fieldston 3-0 on Friday, October 4. The Tigers won all three sets of the match, 25-22, 26-24, and 26-24 and gave the team their first victory over Fieldston in nearly a decade. Dalton has now won five straight matches and improved to 8-3 on the season and tied for 2nd place in the Ivy League. Dalton's next opponent is Trevor Day on Monday, October 7 who they previously defeated in the opening Invitational Tournament last month before an important home league matchup against Poly Prep on Friday, October 11.

Boys Soccer
Boys Soccer took on Fieldston on Friday, October 4 who sat atop the Ivy League undefeated with just one tie on the season. Although Fieldston controlled the ball for much of the game, Dalton held the Eagles scoreless for the entire 80 minutes of regulation. In the second overtime period, the Tigers scored the first goal of the match coming off a free kick. Senior captain Marshall Miller played the ball right into the middle of the box where junior Dylan Taub headed it directly to freshman Mateos Haile Manas who blasted the ball past the Fieldston goalkeeper to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, Fieldston scored just one minute late to tie the game. Although the game ended with a 1-1 draw, the tie against the top league opponent in addition to the earlier season victory over Fieldston gave Dalton an important 4th point against the two other top teams in the league. The Tigers return to action on Monday against Hackley who they previously defeated 2-0.

Cross Country
It was an historic day for the Dalton Cross Country team as both the Boys and Girls teams won their races at the Mayor's Cup, marking the first time ever that both teams won the mee. This was the first championship for the Boys team as the Tigers beat second-place Horace Mann by 12 points.

Dalton was led by a stellar performance by senior Ari Eaton, who finished second in the race shattering his previous best time by 28 seconds and running just over 14 minutes for the 2.5-mile course. Eaton was followed by sophomore Connor Rust who placed ninth overall out of the 162 runners. Junior Daniel Simmons was 11th and senior Ravi Eaton 12th for the Tigers. The two outkicked two Horace Mann runners down the stretch providing some breathing room in the scores. Freshman Luke Rostan was the fifth Tiger runner to cross the line, coming in 22nd place. Seniors Tibor Rothschild and Sean Ryan came in 6th and 7th for Dalton to complete the race.

The Girls had an even tighter finish, beating PSAL school Curtis by 6 points to win the race for the second time in school history. Senior Toni DaCosta led the way putting forth a gutsy effort to finish in second place in one of her top times ever, completing the 2.5-mile course in 16:39. Eighth-grader Naomi Gomel came in fourth and junior Grace Chaikin was eighth, giving Dalton three runners in the top 10 for the first time ever. Freshman Mary Ashley Groot cut a minute off her previous best time to place 28th and junior Emily Saxl completed the Tigers five, placing 56th. Sophomores Audrey Liu and Charlotte Sadelain rounded out the Tigers finishers.
