Women’s US National Soccer Championship Coach Jill Ellis Inspires Students

It’s not every day you get to “kick it” with a two-time FIFA World Cup Champion.

Girls soccer players ranging from 3rd to 12th graders gathered in the 89th St. cafeteria to hear Jill Ellis talk about sports, life, and the lessons she learned as the Head Coach of the US Women’s National Championship Team.
After sharing stories about her illustrious coaching career at the college and professional level — along with lessons she learned along the way -- Jill answered questions ranging from who her favorite player is to her opinion on how to reach gender equality in sports. “The whole experience was incredible. Jill is an inspiring woman and her discussion about the team and knowledge about the sport was so interesting,” said Dagny Patton ’20. “From watching the national team on TV to actually talking with the former coach was a unique and special opportunity."

“It was amazing to be able to meet someone who feels that she has accomplished her dreams in life,” commented Talya Jacoby ’24. “Of all the things she would have wanted to get across to us, Jill told us that the most important thing for us is to find something we are passionate about.”

“When Coach Ellis told our athletes to pursue their dreams, it was a powerful message because it came from someone who is a living example of that message,” said Dalton Girls Soccer coach Anne Gregory. “She knows firsthand that women accomplish great things, so to hear from her that the girls can do anything they dream of, I think it was very empowering.”

Afterward, Ms. Ellis stayed to take pictures, sign soccer balls, and give our student athletes insights about what it takes to succeed at the highest level, including proper nutrition, self-confidence, and finding a personal passion.

Thank you to Jill Ellis for taking the time to visit our aspiring athletes as well as Athletics Coaches Teddy Frischling, Sam Bergen, Anne Gregory, and Dalton Parent Sunil Gulati for their help in organizing this amazing opportunity for our students!
