Students in 5th grade Spanish are studying the language through STEAM-based units.
In our second unit of the year, students learned about six different types of bridges and what factors we need to consider to build a bridge. As their culminating project, students worked in pairs to design and then build a bridge model.
Students visited the Makerspace on the 13th floor to build their bridge using pasta, marshmallows, tape, and string. During their first visit, students took the “marshmallow challenge” to build structures as high as possible and get a feel for the materials. On their second visit, they built their bridges, presented them, and tested them -- describing the bridges in Spanish and guessing how much weight they could sustain.
