Dalton’s New Astronomy Class is Shining Bright

In Dalton’s new Science class, Astronomy: Exploring: The Universe, HS students take an in-depth look at life beneath and beyond the stars.
“The class is designed to start from an Earth-centric perspective, examining how human beings see the sky and the astronomical phenomena that people have been studying with the naked eye for thousands of years,” explains HS Physics Teacher and new faculty member Ryan Brennan. “As the trimester continues, the curriculum expands to explore the Universe on larger and larger scales. Students will learn about the Sun and our Solar System, the life and death of other stars, the Milky Way and vast population of galaxies that fill the Universe, and the origins, evolution, and eventual fate of the Universe itself.”

In their digitalDalton class, students are learning how the Earth’s orbit and tilt are responsible for the seasons as well as engaging in discussions about how the contemporary constellations are just one expression of how cultures have interpreted the night sky throughout history. Students will return to this topic in a few weeks as they conduct independent research on the astronomical knowledge of the Ancient Babylonians, Indians, Egyptians, Chinese, Mayans, and other ancient cultures to dispel the conception that the ancient Greeks were the only culture doing important work.
