Dalton Chess Team Excels at New York State Scholastic Chess Championship
Under the leadership of chess program director Beatriz Marinello and her dedicated coaching staff, the Dalton Chess team proudly represented the School at the '20-'21 New York State Scholastic Chess Championship.
Forty-five students attended the online tournament and competed using the new digital chess format. Dalton’s team consisted of students from First Program, Middle School, and High School competing across four sections.
The Tigers K-1 Championship Team and K-3 Championship Team each earned second-place finishes, while the K-3 Reserve Team finished fourth out of 17 teams. In addition, the K-6 Championship Team took sixth place out of 16 teams.
The team extends a special thank you to their dedicated coaches: Grandmaster Mac Molner, International Master Kassa Korley '11, National Master Nitai Leve, Chess Expert Adia Onyango, and Chess Expert Nelson Dunn. The Tigers are also thankful for their supportive parents and their Zoom manager Matthew Tomlinson, who kept the team organized throughout the event and served as a role model to the younger players.
