7th Grade Spanish Class Immersed in Week of Puerto Rican Culture Programming

This week, 7th grade Spanish students participated in three engaging learning experiences focused on Puerto Rican culture. Sra. Vanesa Gutiérrez-Redondo organized the immersive programming, which included music, cooking, and dancing.
On Monday, students participated in an Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba history, dance, and percussion workshop taught by World Languages Teacher Sra. Verónica Valentín, in collaboration with MS/HS percussion teacher Bill Solomon who set up the space and provided students with the instruments.

On Tuesday, Sra. Gutiérrez-Redondo took her students to the teaching kitchen on 89th Street, where she and Chef Jaz taught the students how to cook tostones de plátano (fried plantains) and make non-alcoholic piña coladas.

Finally, on Thursday, students learned how to dance Salsa in a class taught by HS Psychologist Dr. Josie Díaz, Maintenance Staff Member Joey Velasquez, and Sra. Gutiérrez-Redondo.

Following their range of experiences this week, students learned about different aspects of Puerto Rican culture, while immersing themselves in the language, music, and food.
