Music

The primary objective of the First Music Program is to encourage a lifelong love and appreciation of music through singing, creating, listening, and movement. Through the study of music, we strive to create a Homeplace, where students are acknowledged, affirmed, encouraged, and consistently cared for. Students will grow musically through singing, movement, and music projects. They will explore rhythm, notation, harmony, genre, and musical interpretation. The carefully selected repertoire of songs, dances, and musical games will expose our students to a variety of cultural traditions, rituals, and celebrations.  
 
The social skills of listening, collaborating, taking turns and supporting other children’s efforts are emphasized as children experience the joy of cooperative music-making. Wherever possible, our students are encouraged to be creative and explore their own musical ideas. Instrumental work incorporates a variety of percussion instruments including Orff instruments and music technology. Recorder is introduced in third grade. Group sings and assemblies are presented several times a year to promote DEI goals. They serve to reinforce curricular connections and provide opportunities for children to sing together. Outcomes of the music program include the ability to sing in tune, create music, read simple rhythmic and pitch notation, sing two-part music, practice listening attentively and critically to music, and appreciate varied musical styles from different cultures.

  • Music Kindergarten

    Kindergartners have one 40-Minute class per week, meeting as a whole group. Children experience the elements of music- tempo, rhythm, melody harmony, form, and timbre - through movement, singing, creating, and the use of small percussion instruments. 
     
    The curriculum is based on Dalcroze Eurhythmics, which helps foster imagination, creative expression, coordination, flexibility, concentration, inner hearing, and music appreciation. ‭The students work individually, with partners, or in small groups. ‬Project based-learning will allow students to learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects throughout the year.  
  • Music 1st Grade

    First graders have two 40-minute classes per week. Students learn a larger repertoire of music, including folk songs and songs that complement their social studies curriculum. They explore in greater depth the elements of music that were introduced in Kindergarten. Children are gradually introduced to formal musical symbols and terminology. Listening skills are taught with selected orchestral repertoire where children are able to analyze the music and move creatively. They also experiment with making up new words and verses to familiar songs, creating movements and dances. Project based-learning will allow students to learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects throughout the year. 
  • Music 2nd Grade

    Second graders have music once a week for 40 minutes as a whole class and 40 minutes of instrumental ensemble for one semester, using Orff-pitched percussion and rhythm instruments. In these classes, children work collaboratively, playing a variety of pitched and non-pitched instruments. They develop ensemble skills, learning to maintain a steady beat and listening to one another. Creating and improvising are also introduced and facilitated by the use of music technology.
     
    Throughout the year, students learn songs collectively to reinforce whole grade DEI learning themes as well as prepare songs and music for assemblies and concerts. In addition, part-singing in the form of simple rounds is introduced, and the repertoire of songs from diverse cultures is expanded. Children learn to read music, sing expressively, compose, dance, and play increasingly complex games. They develop their listening skills with exposure to varied musical styles from different cultures that reflect a variety of traditions, rituals, and celebrations. Project based-learning will allow students to learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects throughout the year. 
  • Music 3rd Grade

    Third grade students have two 40-minute classes per week, one general music class and one instrumental class. In instrumental class, children work with unpitched and melodic percussion instruments and are introduced to the recorder. The study of recorders will facilitate the reading of rhythm and formal notation. Students in the third grade learn an increasingly larger repertoire of songs and learn to identify various musical genres. Singing and performing collectively, students reinforce whole grade DEI learning themes as well as prepare songs and music for assemblies and concerts. Part singing of simple rounds encourages children to maintain musical independence while working as a group. Children build on their solfege skills and continue to work on their listening skills. Project based-learning will allow students to learn by actively engaging in real-world and personally meaningful projects throughout the year. 
  • Chorus

    All children (Grades 1-3) are welcome to join the chorus. The First Program Chorus rehearses twice a week before school. The emphasis is on ensemble singing, working towards a beautiful tone, and refining pieces of music for performance. The chorus performs twice a year for the Dalton community–once in the winter and again in the spring. Children often accompany the chorus with a variety of Orff pitched and percussion instruments. The annual spring concert is a celebration of many cultures with songs from around the world.
