Renowned Puerto Rican Author Mayra Santos-Febres Visits HS Advanced Lit Class

Renowned Puerto Rican author Dr. Mayra Santos-Febres visited (virtually) with HS Spanish Teacher Carlos San Juan's class on January 20.
Dr. Santos-Febres' visit – conducted entirely in Spanish – coincided with the "Literature Identities and Struggles" class's study and analysis from last semester on the work of several LGBTQIA2S+ authors such as Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, Camila Sosa Villada, Gabriela Mistral, Carlos Monsiváis, and Federico García Lorca, among others.

Last semester, the students analyzed Santos-Febres' work, including her book Sirena Selena Vestida de Pena, which tells the story of Sirena Selena, a young, queer, homeless boy who sings "boleros" like an angel.

During her visit last week, Santos-Febres read an excerpt from the book, detailed her writing process, and shared the life events that inspired her to research the transgender community in Puerto Rico.

Students followed the presentation by asking questions about identity, Santos-Febres' work with diverse communities, and the statehood of Puerto Rico.

Special thanks to Christine Payne and the Dalton Libraries team, whose generosity and dedication made this event possible.
