Head of School Search

Leadership Transition Next Steps

4/16/2021
Dear Dalton Community,

My fellow Trustees and I are committed to ensuring a seamless transition to the future leadership of our School following Jim's departure at the end of June. I am writing to you now to share the initial steps we are taking toward this objective.

First, we have asked Ellen Stein, Dalton's Head of School from 2001-2018, to serve as our Interim Head of School for the 2021-2022 academic year. She will officially assume the role starting July 1. Ellen is a Dalton alumna who was a beloved head of our First Program and then our High School before becoming Head of School. Her deep institutional knowledge of Dalton, our current strategic plan, and our community at large will ensure vital continuity and continued success towards the achievement of our strategic goals. Please expect to hear more about Ellen, and from her directly, later in the trimester.

Second, I am delighted that former Trustee, current Dalton parent and Ford Foundation Mission Investments Director Roy Swan has generously agreed to chair the Search Committee for our next Head of School. Roy's longstanding service to Dalton includes 12 years on our Board where he occupied the roles of Audit Committee Chair, Treasurer, Secretary and Vice-President. We could not have asked for anyone better suited to take on this crucial leadership role. In the coming days, we will develop and share the full membership of this Committee as well as our plans for leading an inclusive process of soliciting input from all parts of our community.

Third, we have retained Spencer Stuart, a highly regarded international search firm with a strong record in independent school leadership searches, to oversee the search for our next Head of School. We are confident that Spencer Stuart will help us identify candidates that embody Dalton's commitment to progressive education, academic excellence and meeting the needs of the whole child, and who are equally committed to advancing our diversity, equity and inclusion work. Early discussions confirm that Dalton's national standing is strong and will enable us to attract a truly exceptional Head of School.

Finally, I would like to thank Jim and our extraordinary administrative team for their commitment to working with the Board and with all of our incredible faculty and staff to ensure a smooth, seamless continuation of our school's reopening and all of Dalton's other important work for our students and our entire community.  Thank you, also to all our parents and families for supporting our amazing students and our School in a year truly unlike any other.

I wish us all a successful third trimester.

With my best regards,
Aly
