Hiring: Dalton believes that educational excellence in the academic classroom cannot be achieved without an inclusive, racially and culturally diverse faculty.
In 2002, the Dalton Fellows Program, a year-long paid internship, was established to recruit young professionals of color to the teaching profession.
Working closely with the Diversity Director, Dalton established the RFOC (Recruitment of Faculty of Color Committee) to develop strategic approaches to increase faculty of color recruitment and retention. In 2010, Dalton expanded its recruitment outreach to the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) job fairs in the southern United States and the Harvard Expo in the northeast.
Professional Development: Dalton supports professional development in all areas of education, including diversity literacy, by providing in-house programs for faculty and staff and by participating in local and national diversity conferences. In the past several years, Dalton has sponsored a number of professional development workshops and seminars aimed at bringing cultural competency and awareness to every aspect of its pedagogy.
In 2007, Dalton’s professional development day featured a roundtable discussion with Joshua Aronson, Frances Kendall, Linda Powell-Pruitt, and Dena Wallerson on The Impact of Identity on Education, Classroom Culture & Community Life.
In addition, Dr. Keith Hinderlie facilitated discussions with Grade Level Leaders and Department Chairs at a recent GLDC workshop: Ensuring Success for African American Male Students. Faculty focused on effective ways to support African American male students.
