Lengua y Cultura - Language and Culture: Momentos especiales

High School Language and Culture classes engaged in two recent authentic experiences; practicing their Spanish by teleconferencing with their San Juan, Puerto Rican counterparts and cooking together to compete in Taco Wars in the 89th Street Cafeteria.
Spanish Language and Culture: Taco War

Rather than wake up and head to a double physics class or in-class essay, students from the Spanish Language and Culture class engaged in an all-out war—a taco war. Students arrived in the cafeteria at 7:00 AM on Friday, April 20, armed with avocados, tortillas, chicken, and other taco essentials. Their task? To create an amazing tasting (and looking) taco. Students convened in the cafeteria for an hour, cooking to blasting music and channeling their energy and enthusiasm into a successful dish. Students' tacos spanned from sweet breakfast tacos to traditional ones, each interpretation showing a unique take on the popular Mexican dish. Students even made side dishes—dirty Mexican rice and lime-infused ginger-ale drinks, to name a few. At the end of the hour, three esteemed judges thoroughly examined the students’ delectable creations. The winner will be announced in the coming days. Taco ‘bout a fiesta!

Dalton Students Participate in an Intercultural Skype session with High School Students from San Juan, Puerto Rico

“Such a thrilling and rewarding experience," “I gained much insight into the lives of Puerto Rican high schoolers,” “We both like Cardi B!,” “I think I met my future spouse.” These were the responses from students from Carmen Herrera’s Language and Culture class following a Skype session with high schoolers from the Robinson School in Puerto Rico. Dalton and Robinson School students discussed a range of topics: solar energy, deforestation, voting rights, video games, music, sports, social life, and homework. Ultimately, Dalton students walked away from this experience energized, satisfied, and with one new friend.
