Vickie Frémont Leads Art Therapy Session with Dalton French Classes

Vickie Frémont, a Dalton After School teacher and founder of the community service organization, My Hands My Tools, visited HS French classes to lead an art therapy activity in remembrance of the 25th anniversary of the Rwandan genocide.
In the activity, Madame Frémont joined juniors and seniors from three separate French sessions to build human-shaped sculptures out of cloth, fabric, string, shells, and other beautiful materials. Inspired by artist Bruce Clarke’s recent installation of paintings representing Tutsi people -- larger-than-life portraits, the sculptures remember and honor those who were killed in 1994.

It has been 25 years since the genocide in Rwanda, and many people still feel the loss and grief of these atrocities. As Madame Frémont explained to the classes, the purpose of this project is not to dwell on tragic events, but rather to promote healing, awareness, and hope. While students only had a short amount of time to work on their sculpture, the next class picked up the where the last section left off, creating a fully collaborative project that led to truly stunning pieces of artwork.

We invite the entire Dalton community to view the sculptures which will be displayed in the 3rd floor cafeteria this week.
