Intel ISEF Finalist Senior Simone Braunstein Wins NYC Grand Prize in Engineering

Senior Simone Braunstein won the Grand Prize in Engineering at the New York City Science and Engineering Fair. She will represent the New York City Region in the Engineering Category in the Intel ISEF Finals. For the 4th year in a row, the Dalton Science Research Program will be represented at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) Finals.

Dalton wishes Simone luck at the Intel ISEF Finals in Phoenix, AZ.
Referenced from an earlier article about the Intel SemifinalsSimone's research project, "A Novel Haptic Actuator for Robotic Surgery: Utilizing Soft Robotics and an Electro-pneumatic Closed Loop Control System to Accurately Restore an Operator’s Sense of Touch," optimizes the controls for surgeons using a robotic arm, to allow for the real sensation of touch. In Simone's words, "This novel prototype represents the first remote actuator to successfully deliver “bio-mirroring” capabilities, which allow a virtual operator’s experience to mimic six key elements of an actual grasping experience: haptic (touch) input, haptic force feedback, grasping control, a compliant end effector, pliable haptic output and a closed loop control system." Read Simone's full research abstract.

Intel ISEF
, a program of Society for Science & the Public (SSP), is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. To qualify, New York students submit a 20-page research paper on an independent science project and attend the New York City Science and Engineering Fair in February.  Semifinalists move on to another round of competition in March. This year 2% of the 700 New York City entrants were selected as finalists, and will join high school students from over 75 countries, regions, and territories who showcase their independent research and compete for $4 million in prizes at the Intel ISEF Finals.
