A Cultural Exchange Opportunity for 8th Grade Mandarin Students

8th grade students in Adam Lanphier's Mandarin 3MS class recently connected with students from Taiwan and the Boston Latin School as part of a NSLI-Y (National Security Language Initiative for Youth) program. The students in Taiwan presented short talks in Chinese on the theme of “relationship building in language immersion.” The groups then engaged in a discussion with the different classrooms and answered questions from U.S. students about the theme, learning Chinese or life in Taiwan.
This was an excellent opportunity for our students to connect with other students around the world studying the Chinese language. It also gave them an opportunity to exchange cultural perspectives and share ideas around cultural topics.

The NSLI-Y program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students and recent high school graduates to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs. The U.S. office coordinated this virtual event between high school students who are currently studying Chinese in Taiwan, and U.S. schools.
