Seventh Grade Expressive Shoe Design Assignment

From paper to papier-mâché! 7th Grade artists began this Assignment with observational drawings of their own shoes and sneakers.
Next, as part of their ideation process, students created mood boards and visual research, some using New York City as a theme while others drew upon other sources of inspiration. 7th Graders then translated their research and planning into drawings and sketches of how their expressive shoe would be designed. To begin the 3-D component of the Assignment, the artists created a tape cast of their own shoes, added a layer of papier-mâché, and in many cases built upon their shoe sculpture with additions such as wings, heels, and even robotics to create moving parts. To complete the Assignment, students applied paint and detail to create one-of-a-kind, self-expressive sculptures.
