How to Apply

Apply to First Program

We are honored by your interest in Dalton for your young child. Our First Program, affectionately known as "Little Dalton," is a special place for children to spend their early years as Daltonians. A challenging, creative, and supportive environment embraces our youngest students, and our talented and committed faculty and staff guide and encourage them as they begin their K-12 journey.

In order to apply to Kindergarten, all children must be 5 years old by September 1st of the year they enter Kindergarten. Applications are accepted the fall prior to entry, from mid-August to mid-November. We post enrollment notifications on Ravenna in February in accordance with the ISAAGNY timetable.

For the 2022-2023 academic year, we anticipate that we may have places for a few new 2nd and 3rd graders; if you have interest in K, 2nd, or 3rd grade, please submit an application and follow the steps below. We do not anticipate that we will be able to enroll any new students into 1st grade, but if you wish to express your interest in 1st grade, you may do so here; upon doing so, rest assured that we will contact you in the event we are able to consider new applicants for the grade.

FP Application Steps

List of 5 items.

  • 1) Submit your preliminary application. (Deadline: 9:00pm on November 19, 2021)

To begin the process of applying, a short preliminary application form and application fee of $75 are required.* We encourage families to submit this as soon as possible in Ravenna. The application is available after August 16, 2021 at noon and due no later than 9:00pm on November 19, 2021.

*If the application fee presents a hardship for your family, please use fee waiver code NEEDFA.
  • 2) Schedule your child's admissions assessment.

Kindergarten: Dalton requires each applicant to Kindergarten to take a non-standardized assessment, the T&E (The Thinking and Engaging Activities Assessment). Many ISAAGNY schools in the city have joined together to create and administer this assessment, which your child will only need to take once, regardless of the number of T&E schools your family may be applying to. Registration for the T&E opens on September 9, 2021. Please review further details on the T&E assessment.
2nd grade: No formal standardized testing is required, but Dalton's Admissions team members may meet with applicants to 2nd grade virtually (on Zoom) to conduct an internal assessment. Depending on the number of applications received, we may not be able to meet and assess all applicants. We will contact families to schedule these meetings.
3rd grade: All applicants are required to submit recent testing results from the ISEE Primary. This testing should take place during the fall of the student's application, between August and the first week of January, and dates for testing must be scheduled directly with the testing provider, ERB. Preferred dates and locations for testing do fill, so be sure to register for this testing as early as possible.
Fees for the ISEE testing range from $140 to $225, but fee waivers are available for low-income families. After submitting your preliminary application to Dalton, please contact Jennifer Pease, Director of Financial Aid, to request a fee waiver.
  • 3) Learn more about Dalton, and "visit" with us!

Unfortunately, for the 2021-2022 school year, we are still facing restrictions on allowing visitors to tour our physical buildings at this time. We will be conducting all tours and parent meetings virtually on Zoom.

We will call you after receiving your child's application to schedule a time for your virtual tour and your parent meeting. Families are called in the order that the applications are received, so submitting this application as soon as possible allows for the most flexibility in scheduling.  Due to the large number of applications submitted, please allow several weeks for us to contact you.

We will also be holding open house events online this year. More information about and registration for these events will be available on Ravenna
  • 4) Request an ISAAGNY Confidential School Report from your child's current school or teacher.

The ISAAGNY Confidential School Report is a comprehensive recommendation form and record for your child from their current school. Please request your child's teacher or a school administrator (often the nursery school director) to complete and submit this form to Dalton. You can email a copy of this form directly to them through Ravenna, and they can submit it electronically, too. You can check periodically in your Ravenna account to track Dalton's receipt of the school report. It must be received no later than January 7 (or December 1 for Dalton community members who qualify for and have requested Early Notification).
  • (Optional) Submit any optional, supplemental materials.

A parent statement and personal recommendations are completely optional, but if you wish to submit these, there are template forms available to facilitate submission on Ravenna.
