After School

About After School

Dalton offers an After School Program to all K–8th grade students.

The program runs instructional classes from 3:15– 4:30 PM for grades K-8. At First Program, students select from a broad range of courses including Computer Fun and Games, Tennis, Beyond Lego, Guitar, Woodworking, Hip Hop, Mini-Musical, Cooking, French, Photography, and many more.

ASP has introduced Serendipity Study Corner, providing support for third graders with home assignments. Kids Club, from 4:30 until 5:30 PM, provides additional after school support for Dalton families. Here students play organized games, listen to stories, draw, work on the computer, do homework, and have a snack. The Dalton Language Initiative offers a more intensive after school language experience for Dalton’s youngest students.

The renowned Dalton Chess Academy is another component of the After School Program, offering all levels of chess instruction to Dalton students.

First Program students are also introduced to STEAM and robotics classes which provide active, hands-on problem-solving activities and encourage students to create, invent, build, and make discoveries. Continuation of the After School Program is available in the Middle School.

The After School Program is offered on a fee basis with a sliding scale for those families receiving tuition assistance.

Philosophy of the After School Program

The After School Program shares a consistent philosophy with The Dalton School. The programs echo the School’s commitment to valuing all dimensions of each child and valuing all disciplines. We actively work to promote a sense of community and responsibility towards others.  Whether achieved through the global reach of our multi-cultural class offerings, or demonstrated through our inter-aged classes which allow older students to serve informally as mentors to younger students, we work to broaden students' experience while we deepen their sense of familiarity. We strive to create a seamless transition from Dalton’s school day into the extended day while taking the opportunity to offer different and unique classes and exposure to areas that might not be available in the daily school curriculum.

The Program is envisioned through two lenses. We promote skills-based, progressive classes (i.e. martial arts, dance, languages) which are designed to encourage the development of continuity and craft with their respective disciplines. We also offer classes with the goal of encouraging students to sample many different areas of learning, valuing the process of the exploration as a meaningful end in itself.

The program offers financial aid scholarships to families at a tuition-based percentage fee.  We consistently maintain an atmosphere of equity and inclusion.  We are mindful of the mission of the Program as service-driven and we support our philosophy through practice.  The After School Program is a vital component of Dalton's commitment to diversity and community.
