Looking Beyond Dalton

Dalton is an academically rigorous, progressive educational environment that offers a vibrant dynamic, and caring atmosphere in which to learn. Dalton cultivates students who value the acquisition of knowledge, the beauty of the disciplines, and the responsibility to employ the liberal arts education in service not only to the self but also to the greater society. The successful Dalton graduate values respect, integrity, compassion, and justice, understanding these as vital to the school’s mission of fostering community responsibility, combating prejudice, and participating in a democratic society and global community.

The Dalton College Counseling Office employs a team approach in supporting each student's college planning and admissions process, involving parents, House Advisors, and faculty. We take a student-centered, data-driven approach to guiding families through the college process. At Dalton, the process is highly individualized, and we pool our collective experience and expertise to offer students empathetic and strategic college advising. We emphasize fit when helping students explore potential college options. Our office has developed an extensive suite of programming accessible to all high school students and their families as they embark on this process, collaborating with college admissions officers and industry-leading professionals.

What to Expect

List of 3 items.

  • Freshman & Sophomore Year

In ninth grade, students explore their academic and extracurricular interests. All student engage in a broad foundational curriculum and explore their burgeoning interests through elective courses. The College Office hosts college counseling presentations for families, introducing a general outline of the college process, while also emphasizing making the most of High School. In tenth grade, students continue to engage in the rigorous, interdisciplinary core curriculum as they continue to hone their interests. Sophomores explore the role of standardized testing in the college process and begin to develop a testing plan by taking the PSAT (fall), and eventually the mock ACT and SAT (spring).
  • Junior Year

Juniors meet with an assigned counselor who works with students one-on-one throughout the college process, from exploration and initial planning through application and decision. Following an initial conference with their child's counselor early in the second semester, parents may arrange additional meetings with the counselor throughout the college planning and application process. During the course of the cycle, other evening programs are offered to students and parents, including a special presentation on financial aid and a major spring college fair.

In addition to individual college counseling and conferences with both students and parents, juniors take a weekly college counseling class, beginning the second semester of eleventh grade. After students complete a thorough self-assessment and sample college application, individual and group meetings introduce them to topics such as essay writing, campus visits, applications, financial aid, and early admissions programs. Together, the student and counselor will develop a broad list of colleges to consider by the end of junior year and narrow the list down by early fall of senior year.
  • Senior Year

In twelfth grade, students work closely with their counselor to finalize college lists with a focus on fit. The students meet bi-weekly with their counselor to prepare college application materials. Throughout this process, counselors use Dalton-specific application data to help students make strategic choices. Concurrently, the college counseling course continues through the fall of senior year. Over 100 college admissions representatives visit each fall to meet with Dalton students during the school day. Once students receive admissions decisions, their college counselors help them navigate their options, including understanding their financial aid options.
