The Middle School library curriculum focuses on teaching information literacy skills through the T.I.G.E.R. research process, building on the learning in First Program, as well as fostering a love of reading and a caring, inclusive community. Students in 4th grade have a scheduled library time each week as they transition to Big Dalton and students in 5th through 8th grades operate on the open, or flexible, model in which the librarians and teachers collaborate on learning experiences in the context of classroom learning. Houses also have times to bring students for regular library browsing and checkout. Some of the Middle School collaborations include 5th grade CivEx research, 6th grade Han Dynasty database building, 7th grade Genre Studies, and 8th grade History research and Literature Circles.

Middle School Programs
One of the favorite activities of the Middle School librarians is Reader’s Advisory! This is an opportunity to speak with students individually about their reading and make recommendations based on their interests. The librarians provide book lists and presentations throughout the year to engage with students and their reading, such as the Book Awards talks each February based on the ALA’s Youth Media Awards. Students in 6th-8th grades are invited to use the library for DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) during their daily playstreet time. Each grade level also has a lively book club that meets on a regular basis to read and discuss new books. The library sponsors author visits based on both curricular connections and student interest. Some authors who have visited in the past are Jason Reynolds, Christine Soontornvat, Stacy McAnulty, Rebecca Stead, Neal Shusterman, Stuart Gibbs, Gary D. Schmidt, and Kwame Alexander.
