Middle School

Welcome to our Middle School community! At the heart of the Middle School are our students. In our hallways, individuals come together to collaborate in a shared mission, one that begins and ends with academic curiosity, passion, empathy and the capacity for joy when tackling and solving increasingly complex problems. Together as a community of teachers and learners, we endeavor to build an environment that nurtures the whole student by cultivating scholarship and academic excellence, embracing equity and diversity in all of its forms and making available technological tools to enhance process and product.

During these transformative years, students experience profound physical, emotional and intellectual growth. Entering Middle School as 4th graders and leaving at the end of 8th grade, students enjoy a long runway to take intellectual risks, recognize successes and learn from missteps. We encourage students to embrace struggle and growth along the paths they've traveled, as well as celebrate their accomplishments upon arrival at their destinations. When visiting classrooms in the Middle School, one sees students working together to inspire themselves and others, identify and grapple with challenges, create solutions, innovate, test existing norms, consider consequences and think critically. Our talented and innovative faculty create curricula and programs that encourage students to embrace inquiry, engage in independent thinking, advocate for themselves, feel empowered to make choices and collaborate on authentic problems by finding value in varied perspectives. The Dalton Plan provides the blueprints for individual scholarship and self-expression. Additionally, through immersion in House, Assignment and Lab, students learn to contribute to a community, question, and navigate challenges as global citizens.

This website offers you a sneak peek into the Middle School landscape - the continued importance of Helen Parkhurst’s vision to our curriculum and program development, the warmth and care of our dedicated faculty and administrators, and the joy our students take in their community and studies. I encourage you to explore these pages to see for yourself what makes our school and our division so special.
