Our Chess program starts in kindergarten as a core part of the curriculum! -
Third graders enjoy a hands-on archaeology study. -
Service learning is integrated into student life early in the Dalton experience. -
As an exciting part of the first program Dance & Theater program, second graders perform in a grade-wide, New York-themed original musical each year. -
Dalton students begin their study of world languages in kindergarten, with an immersive Spanish program. -
The Parents Association’s Multicultural Festival is a way for the entire First Program community to come together to celebrate and learn more about our cultural diversity. -
The concepts of allyship and solidarity are introduced to students as young as kindergarten-aged, with a school-wide celebration of Ally/Solidarity Week, a national, student-led initiative that builds support for LGBTQ+ students and educators.

In Middle School, they grow and they stretch, with caring and passionate teachers to guide and light their paths, and exciting, increasingly rigorous and interdisciplinary curriculum to enthrall their minds…

The 6th Grade Greek Festival, a highlight of the 6th grade year, is a classic example of interdisciplinary curriculum at work at Dalton, integrating history, literature, math, the arts, and more. -
The 4th Grade Ellis Island Simulation is an exciting immersive project as part of their study of immigration. -
Interdisciplinary studies, such as this Spanish class's unit "Los Puentes que Nos Unen (The Bridges that Unite Us)", which incorporates both Spanish and Engineering, are frequent in the Dalton Middle School. -
5th graders take a hands-on look at the ancient past with scholars from the Penn Museum at the annual Mesopotamia Day. -
The annual Dalton Hero Con, a fun event attended by students in all grades, also celebrates the social justice advocacy of everyday heroes (as well as fictional superheroes!). -
Seventh and eighth grade dance students produce a dance film each year, performed in locations both in and out of the school. -
Computer Science and Engineering are introduced informally in early grades, and start to truly blossom in middle school. Robotics teams start in fifth grade!

In High School, they spread their wings and look to the horizon...

The Engineering program and the maker spirit continue to deepen in high school, when students have even more freedom to independently explore our Maker Space. -
A student danced and choreographed performance, the annual Dance Theater Workshop is a highlight of the high school Dance program. -

The Dalton Science Research Program (a natural offshoot from the 9th grade biology independent research projects) connects high school students with opportunities to pursue laboratory work, perform field-related study, or explore their own transdisciplinary interests in the greater NYC community. -
Our robust Creative Writing program, which offers an array of elective options for high school students, hosts a poetry festival, author visits, and of course, student readings. -
Student-run clubs in the high school play an increasing role in the life of the school. For instance, the high school club Bit by Bit hosts an annual conference for girls interested in computer science! -
This eleventh grade research assignment on “Migration, Memory, and Modernity in the 20th and 21st Centuries” creates a showcase of the student work to share with the community. -
Graduating seniors choose a Senior Initiative project to undertake in the last month of their twelfth grade year in lieu of regular classes, and showcase a wide variety of personal interests of our oldest students. -
Dalton's new, state-of-the-art teaching kitchen introduces students to the culinary arts through electives such as PopFood, in which students work with teachers to create pop-up restaurants, or investigations into other food-related topics.
