Students Converse with Chinese-Spanish Graphic Novelist Quan Zhou

Students in Spanish Literature and Food class had the opportunity to converse with Quan Zhou, a Chinese-Spanish illustrator and graphic novelist, to discuss race narratives in contemporary Spanish society.
Students read Gazpacho Agridulce, Ms. Zhou’s autobiography and her first graphic novel, to prepare for her visit. They strengthened their interpretive listening skills during her lecture on Chinese immigration, media, and representation in Spain and as compared with the US. Students also engaged their interpersonal speaking skills by asking questions about her inspiration and creative process as a visual storyteller, women’s voices in her novels, and the importance of women authors in Spanish literature. Students learned about Ms. Zhou’s perspectives on being a child of immigrants in Spain and the continuous process of identity construction.

Ms. Zhou is the King Juan Carlos I Chair in Spanish Culture and Civilization at NYU this spring semester. She contributes articles to Eldiario and Vogue Spain and has also written and illustrated for the newspaper El País.

Thank you to Christine Payne, Director of Libraries and Information Services, for the support in inviting Quan Zhou.
