In 2007, the school embarked on a ten-year Strategic Plan that included Diversity as a separate initiative.
The Community Life & Diversity committee of the trustees, formed in the early 2000s, along with the administration created the goals that included Dalton creating and hosting a diversity leadership conference.
The school hosted the Student Leadership Conference (2011-13), a student-driven conference under the guidance of the Diversity Office that invited leaders to Dalton to share their stories, and continues to host From Diversity to Community (2011-present), that invites all constituent groups from New York City independent schools working on issues of building more inclusive schools.

In addition, in order to include diversity in all conversations on a Board level, a member of the CL&D trustees committee sits on at least one other board committee.
