Momentum Builds for Tigers this Spring

The Tigers head into a busy week of Ivy League play, with multiple teams gaining momentum as the spring season reaches its midpoint.
Girls Lacrosse is tied for second in the Ivy League. Dalton sits at 5–2 in conference play and 6–2 overall. The Tigers secured impressive victories last week against first-place Hackley (10–9) and fellow second-place contender Poly Prep (12–10). Dalton’s two losses have come against Fieldston, who is also tied for second. Senior standout Lucy Schell leads the offense with 43 goals and five assists, including her 200th career goal in a 13–2 win over Trinity on April 10. Eighth grader Georgia Moore has made a strong impact with 23 goals and an assist. Senior goalie Oriana Hunter has recorded 57 saves across six starts.

Boys Lacrosse enters the week at 3–4. Dalton defeated Riverdale 7–2 two weeks ago for its first win against the Falcons since 2014. The Tigers have also secured wins over Trinity and Horace Mann. Two of Dalton’s losses have come against Fieldston by a combined three goals. Dalton competed well against undefeated Poly Prep last week, falling 14–9. Statistical leaders include sophomore James Simmons with 15 goals, senior Daya Singh leading in assists and points, and senior Connor Smyth in ground balls. Sophomore goalie Asher Klein has stopped better than 60% of shots.

Varsity Softball is 4–4 overall and 3–4 in league play. Dalton earned wins over Ivy opponents Trinity, Riverdale, and Horace Mann before dropping three straight. Senior Mackenzie Mortman (.483), junior Sloan Silvers (.450), and junior Olivia Nogueira (.440) lead the Tigers in batting average. Junior Emi Stolzberg and eighth grader Riley Sexton have combined for seven of Dalton’s eight starts in the circle.
 
Varsity Baseball defeated Collegiate 13–2 on April 17 for its lone win. Freshman Tai Stolzberg earned the victory with five innings pitched, allowing one earned run while striking out five. Sophomore Maxwell Lincoln leads Dalton with a .379 average and one home run. Junior Chase Nelson is hitting .312 with a team-high .538 on-base percentage. Junior infielder Jonathan Nallengara has driven in eight runs. Stolzberg, Lincoln, and senior Henry Grayer have accounted for 38.1 of the Tigers’ 51 innings pitched.

Girls Track and Field has excelled through three Ivy meets. Senior Joanna Constantiner placed fifth in the high jump at the New York Relays with a personal-best 4–10. Classmate Maggie Bassey is the top triple jumper in NYSAIS. Junior Sabrina Marra consistently finishes among the leaders in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Marra, junior Isabel Allen, and sophomore Lily Dassori are among the top pole vaulters in the Ivy League. Sophomore Joie Christie-Ward and freshman Maya Matsubara are among the top hurdlers in the conference. Additional standout performers include freshman Isabella Canada in the 800- and 1500-meter runs, and junior Athena Drallios in the steeplechase.

Boys Track and Field senior Kannon Hunter is the top-ranked high jumper in both the private schools and New York City, clearing 6–5. He has also excelled in the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Fellow seniors Holden MacDougall and Gabe Ponichter are Dalton’s top distance runners. MacDougall, junior Christopher Schaaf, sophomore Graydon Barz, and freshman Elliot Higgins-Woo set the school record in the 4x1600-meter relay at the New York Relays. Other standouts include junior Amir Joseph in the 100-meter dash and long jump, senior Mathias Osback in the shot put, senior Will Safranek in the discus, and sophomore Carson Cohen in the javelin.

Boys Tennis faces Collegiate at Queens College on Monday, April 27. The Tigers are 2–6 overall and 1–5 in the Ivy League. Dalton opened the season with a 5–0 win over Columbia Prep and a 4–1 victory against Fieldston in its conference opener. Senior Alexander Mash plays number one singles, senior Augie Emmanuel is at number two, and senior Campbell Langdon holds the number three spot. Sophomores Tristan Brien and Vedant Kotahwala compete at first doubles. The duo trailed Riverdale 6–1, 5–0 before mounting a thrilling comeback in the second set and securing a 10-point tiebreak victory.

Varsity Golf looks to secure its first win at Riverdale on Monday, April 27. Dalton’s top golfers are sophomores Dhruv Shah, Kate Korngold, and Ella Kirschner. Season highlights include Kirschner shooting a 39 at Dyker and Korngold recording a 48 at Liberty National.

Boys Volleyball is 2–5 heading into its match at Riverdale on Monday, April 27. Dalton opened the season with a 3–1 win over Fieldston and earned a 3–2 victory against Packer Collegiate last week. Junior Kaya Karakaplan, junior Nathan Balboni, and sophomore Rafferty Berry are among Dalton’s key contributors.
