Chess Team Has Impressive Performance at National Middle School Championship
Members of the Dalton Chess Team traveled to Round Rock, Texas, last weekend to compete in the National Middle School Chess Championship, finishing in an outstanding 3rd place in the country.
The competition was exceptionally strong, with more than 1,200 middle school students from across the United States competing at a very high level.
Dalton sent a team of 10 students: four 7th graders — Elliott Goodrich ’31, Anson Leong ’31, Owen Pang ’31, and Eden Lily Klein ’31 — and six 8th graders — Robert Samant Sen ’30, Sebastian Koh Hemlock ’30, Joshua Varughese Kuruvilla ’30, Fabrizzio Quinonez Hernandez ’30, Anthony John Mavroudis ’30, and Hannah Chan ’30. Elliott Goodrich ’31 earned an impressive individual result, finishing in 9th place overall with 5½ points.
The team was led by WIM Beatriz Marinello, who helped prepare the players for their games, supported them emotionally throughout the tournament, and coordinated the team’s logistics. Special guest coach GM Gregory Kaidanov expertly assisted the students with opening preparation and post-game analysis. Throughout the weekend, the team demonstrated excellent sportsmanship, camaraderie, and team spirit. Students worked hard preparing for games while also enjoying opportunities to relax and bond with one another between rounds.
Special thanks go to all the parents who supported the team throughout the weekend and helped make the experience possible.
The Dalton Chess Team can compete successfully at this level because of the dedication, encouragement, and support of every member of the Dalton chess community.
