Kwame Brathwaite ’92 Shares His Father’s Story at a High School Assembly
As part of Black History Month, Dalton welcomed back Kwame Samori Brathwaite Jr., Class of 1992, who is the Director of the Kwame Brathwaite Archive, at the High School assembly on February 26.
Kwame spoke with students about the importance of preserving his father's iconic photography — which was deeply rooted in music, fashion, and activism — and his commitment to telling his father’s story.
He shared personal anecdotes, along with a clip from a recent documentary, “Black is Beautiful: The Kwame Brathwaite Story,” highlighting his father’s work and the celebrities who have curated and championed his art over the years. Kwame explained that artists continue to be inspired by Brathwaite’s photography, and exhibits around the world help keep his work in the conversation and considered through a contemporary lens.
The Black Student Union heads, Kellen Calloway ’26, Wongail Awoke ’27, and Astou Toure ’26, introduced Kwame and led the Q&A session after his presentation.
