Students Celebrate Lunar New Year with Chinatown Seniors
In the midst of Lunar New Year celebrations, the Mandarin Department, in collaboration with the Global and Community Engagement Office, organized a special visit to a senior center in Chinatown.
Fourteen ninth graders prepared and performed three Mandarin songs from different eras — “The Moon Represents My Heart,” “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” and “A Little Sweet.” The students introduced themselves in Mandarin and warmly invited the seniors to sing along. The seniors also prepared two wonderful performances of their own — singing and dancing — which made the gathering feel especially festive.
As part of the Lunar New Year tradition, the seniors presented the students with red envelopes, symbolizing good luck and blessings for the year ahead. Both the students and the seniors genuinely enjoyed each other’s performances and the time they spent together. When the seniors asked for an encore, the students happily performed an additional English song. At the end of the visit, one senior shared a touching reflection: having the students there felt just like her own grandchildren had come to visit. Moments like this remind us that language learning can build meaningful connections across generations and communities.
