Amadi Washington '10 and Sam Pratt '10 Infuse Dance with Civil War References
Alumni dancers Amadi Washington '10 and Sam Pratt '10, introduced by Dance Chair Randi Sloan, returned to dance for the high school assembly on October 15, 2015. The duo showcased an original piece, sourced and influenced by the controversial content depicted in the 1915 film "Birth of a Nation." Popular at the time, and financially successful, the heavily racist film was directed by the acclaimed D.W. Griffith.
Prior to their performance, the pair explained that they created the piece because they felt the dance world is not tackling enough political issues, and they wanted to contribute to that conversation. The performance represented a sneak preview of a more substantial piece they are preparing. The dance featured five thematic gestures, derived from the Civil War, pulled from house slave movements, shucking and jiving, and the ways that soldiers hold a rifle, among other gestures. The two showcased and explained each gesture before they danced for the assembly.
