Girls Varsity Basketball Picks Up Critical Win Over Rye Country Day By Ema Schumer
Girls Varsity Basketball (16-3), boasting an 8-1 league record and an 8-2 out of league record, found itself in a pivotal moment on Friday night.
Dalton faced Rye Country Day, a team against which Dalton has an unspoken rivalry after Dalton conceded an upset loss to Rye the semi-finals of the 2015 NYSAIS Tournament.
Entering the home-stretch of the regular season with only two weeks remaining, the game was also imperative in determining the Tigers’ seed in the playoffs.
Dalton cruised to a 49-30 victory, not once relinquishing the lead throughout all four quarters.
Girls Varsity Basketball earned itself a win through a fast-paced game tempo, relentless defense, unselfish play, and hungry demeanor, hallmarks of the team that make it dreaded by its opponents.
In perhaps her most dominant game of her Dalton career thus far, Elise Bousquette ’18 was ubiquitous on both ends of the floor. She scored 14 points, racked up 14 rebounds, and blocked 7 shots.
Dalton’s defense, which rotated from a box-in-1 to a triangle-and-two to a half court man, prevented Rye from finding a rhythm on the offensive end. While Rye averages 55 points per game, the team only managed to score 30 on Friday night. Rye’s star player, who averages around 20 points per game this season, was held to only 10 points by Dalton’s smothering defense.
Dalton gave Rye its third defeat of the season.
Girls Varsity Basketball has three games remaining in the regular season, the most noteworthy of which is its face off against Poly Prep this Friday, February 10 at 6:30pm at the Dalton Gym. Poly is the only team in the state to which Dalton has lost, and the game will most likely determine who will clinch the 2017 Ivy Preparatory League pennant.
