On Monday, April 17, Boys Varsity Tennis prevailed over Poly Prep, bringing to an end a weary, two-year team drought in league victories.

The decisive 4-1 victory showcased a range of talent for the Tigers, both in singles and doubles play alike. Co-captain Robert Freitag ’17 won at the No. 1 singles slot; Justin Taub ‘19 and co-captain Justin Kallus ‘17 won the No. 1 doubles match, and Clay Garfield ’19 and Shaan Lalvani (’19) picked up a win at the No. 2 doubles slot. The win did not come without some serendipity, as Nick Manriquez ‘17 won No. 3 singles by default because his opponent was unable to attend the match.

Freitag asserted that this win was nothing of the mundane, speaking of the formidable competition within the league. “Most, if not all, other schools in our league have top tier players that are highly ranked in NY and even the country, so it takes a lot of hard work to build a team that can stand up to teams with those kinds of players,” he said.

Some of that hard work Freitag refers to includes honing the perfect doubles partners: “I’d say one of the biggest match-winning factors are the doubles matches, and we have especially worked hard this year finding the perfect #1 and #2 doubles partnerships, which all came together at Poly.”

“Justin [Kallus] and I had very good chemistry because of the way we keep each other positive throughout the match,” Taub said.

After tasting in-league victory, Freitag is far from satisfied: “We’re thrilled with the win, but we know this is only the beginning of a great season.”

With this latest and much-needed victory under its belt, Boys Varsity Tennis hopes to add more wins to its record this season, making a statement that this two-year league losing streak is far behind the team and is not intended to be repeated.
