House 33 Performs "Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock"

House 33 performed "Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock." We incorporated our learning about animals in their habitats, African dance, and puppetry and added short movies we made on the iPad. Our dance and theater teacher Justin Greer supported the children as they negotiated, collaborated and choreographed their dances.
Anansi the Spider is a character from a series of trickster tales that originated in West Africa. We can find versions of these stories in the Caribbean, South America, and the southern United States.

As a run up to the play the children:
  • choreographed animal dances in groups, using what they had learned about the way animals move through and respond to their environments.
  • made short movies based on scenes in the play, using iPads and the Puppet Pals app. This involved the challenges of reading, listening and telling a story that makes sense.
  • and they worked on mural making depicting different aspects of the African landscape.
